Comstock Heritage Sutro Providence
The Sutro Providence buckle by Comstock Heritage is made on a heavy gauge sterling silver base with a 14k yellow gold border and pyramid motif. The centerpiece is an exceptional green diamond set in a gold likeness of the Renaissance-era Eye of Providence, detailed and engraved by hand with a nod to the symbol’s more famous adaptation on the U.S. dollar bill. Fits all 1.5 inch belt straps.
Comstock Heritage Sutro Believe
The Sutro Believe Buckle by Comstock Heritage features an arrangement of hand-carved 14k yellow gold and sterling silver letters, and an array of precious and semi-precious stones set in silver and gold bezels, including cognac diamonds, sapphires, topaz, amethyst, clinohumite, and a single black diamond. Engraved on the back, this simple message from the maker speaks volumes: Believe in the value of your mistakes. Every letter and stone used in this buckle is, in a sense, a mistake… or rather was a mistake. Rendered out of place by a change of mind, a design revision, etc., the pieces were ‘wrong’ only as a matter of perspective. It serves, perhaps, as a reminder: that every dead-end is a chance for a new path, that even mistakes offer fresh possibility—if only one believes in their value.
Comstock Heritage Sutro Springtime
The Sutro Springtime buckle by Comstock Heritage features seven multi-colored Montana sapphire slices set in silver bezels atop 18k green gold wire ‘stems’, twisted by hand around brilliant-cut emeralds and sapphires. A lustrous border of 18k yellow gold wire illuminates the lightly brushed sterling silver face to create a striking but playful, Chihuly-esque display of color. Handmade to fit all 1.5 inch belt straps.
Comstock Heritage Mason Bellini
The Mason Bellini buckle by Comstock Heritage features four black diamonds (7.69ct) set in 18k yellow gold bezels below 18k yellow gold scrollwork, delicately restrained in Italianate style. Lightly brushed bars of 18k green gold form borders to the top and bottom, their rich color deepening the palette to welcome the prominent black diamonds, which otherwise may have set off too strongly against a backdrop of only darkened silver and lustrous yellow gold. The buckle itself has a surprising heft, offering a pleasing aesthetic dimension of weight to correspond with the solid borders and darkly indelicate diamonds. Handmade to fit all 1.5 inch belt straps.
Comstock Heritage Mason Vines Sapphire
The Mason Vines Sapphire buckle by Comstock Heritage features 18k yellow gold vines covered by and connected to individually hand-shaped sterling silver leaves, highlighted by ten Montana sapphires. The raised leaves lend a visual texture that, along with the buckle’s natural shape and exceptionally intricate engraving, creates a vibrant, earthy aesthetic. Handmade to fit 1.5 inch belt straps.
Comstock Heritage Sutton Hoo
The Sutton Hoo buckle by Comstock Heritage is made on a base of hand-wrought sterling silver with three cabochon lapis lazuli set in 18k yellow gold bezels, surrounded by sterling silver patterning with 18k yellow gold dragonhead shapes. The border is 14k rose gold, hand-cut with a jeweler’s saw to create a unique edging effect—a diverting challenge for Comstock, but one that few others even would attempt. The buckle takes its name from a 7th century Anglo-Saxon burial site noted for, among other things, historical connections to the Old English epic Beowulf, and its regal design fittingly reflects the mythical grandeur of early-Medieval art and folk legend. Handmade to fit all 1.5 inch belt straps.
Comstock Heritage Sutro Decour Turquoise
The Sutro Decour Turquoise buckle by Comstock Heritage is made on a hand-wrought sterling silver base with a fine rose gold border and lush floral pattern comprising 14k rose gold, 14k yellow gold, and sterling silver pieces. Centrally placed in an 18k yellow gold bezel is a fine example of Tyrone turquoise: the color is a rare azure shade—set off beautifully by the rich gold bezel—with flecks of dark host minerals deepening the palette. The stone’s smooth shape and color-tone, along with its neatly clustered webbing, register a natural aesthetic that plays thoughtfully against the sprawling ballast of metallic flora. Handmade to fit a 1.5in belt strap.

Comstock Heritage Bart's Treasure
Made from a thick slab of sterling silver (8 ounces), the Bart’s Treasure buckle is one of the heaviest pieces James Stegman has made to date. Thick bars of sterling silver and 14k gold add to the buckle’s bold character and add nice movement and visual balance to the face, which is capped off with a 2k-cabochon ruby. Heavy etching on the sterling silver background creates an appealing texture contrast with the smooth bars and gem, underscoring their effect while retaining the bold-but-balanced aesthetic.
Comstock Heritage Celtic Scrolls
For this buckle, James felt like playing with a new angle on the longtime theme of Old World scrollwork; the specific inspiration for this piece came from seeing a museum display of traditional Celtic artwork. The 14k gold scrolls were inlaid using the uncommon and exceedingly difficult technique of recessing, which involves cutting the shape of the inlay into the sterling silver face precisely, then securing the fully formed gold inlay in place. Not many smiths attempt this process because there is absolutely no margin of error, but when done correctly (as it was here) it creates a very cool effect—the gold scrolls appear 3-dimensional because of their smooth, lustrous contrast against the rough, dark sterling silver backdrop, but the buckle’s face is actually flat.
Comstock Heritage Lorien Vines
Another of James’ reinterpretations of the longtime scrollwork motif, the Lorien Vines buckle started out as a thick piece of sterling silver that was carved down to create the vine and leaf pattern in relief, to which 14k rose gold vines were added for accent. Beveling at the sides of the vines and leaves gives them a smooth, organic impression that characterizes the aesthetic of the buckle as a whole. A sense of balance arises from the motion and liveliness in the gracefully tapering vines and leaves, a sort of harmony in their organic asymmetry. There is an incredible level of detail on some of the leaves (they almost look like silver castings of real leaves), while the tailing ends of others suggests a subtle touch of Old World artifice; the seamless interplay between these themes whispers an undertone, perhaps, of mysticism.
Comstock Heritage Mason Gold and Raw Diamonds
This buckle is made with a hand-wrought sterling silver base, but the dominant aesthetic comes from the thick 14k yellow gold bordering, the 14k yellow and rose gold floral patterning, and the four raw diamonds set in fine silver bezels. We especially enjoy the color correspondence here, as the outer two raw diamonds, with slightly ruddy natural colorations of their own, pick up the bold yellow and rose colors beautifully.
Comstock Heritage Quarry Gold and Raw Diamonds
This buckle features a hand-wrought sterling silver base, 14k rose gold top and bottom borders, sterling silver floral patterning, and three raw diamonds set in fine silver bezels. We love the color effects possible with raw diamonds, and the selection of these three is a great example. Each has enough light refraction to pick up the surrounding colors—the bold rose gold border, the darkened sterling base, and the burnished silver patterning—yet they also retain some natural coloration to add a unique flavor of their own. James carefully picked these three for their subtle color correspondence with each of the buckle’s three major metal colors.
